At Eastprint, an East West Business, we pushed the boundaries of silk screen printing technology to transform the vision of a manufacturer of consumer appliances to a real-world application. We produced the temperature control panel highlighted here for use in a line of refrigerators and freezers. This unique display window featured a metallic silver gradient printed on the white background of a dead front panel. On a dead front panel, the main concept is to keep graphics invisible by blending them in with the background, and only illuminate them when you want the consumer to see them. Our challenge was to keep these symbols clear and legible through the printed gradient layer when lit. This decorative yet functional design was as yet out of the norm for a silk screen printing process.

With 30+ years of experience and advanced technical competencies, we developed a process for printing the metallic silver gradient progression on the graphic overlay. Constructed from .015″ thick hard coated polycarbonate with a high gloss finish, the window featured finished dimensions of 1.512″ in length x 25.594″ in width. Manufactured to within ±.010″ tolerances, we performed a spectral analysis to ensure a precise color match.

This unique dead front window added aesthetic appeal to the appliance and readily directed the consumer’s attention to the graphics when they lit up. We produced 5,000 of these units within a six-week time frame. The appliance company was so impressed with the results they incorporated this design into many of their products. Over the years, we have lent the company technical assistance for several graphic updates to keep their displays fresh and on-trend.
